Human Brain Tissue Integrated Computer Chip Receives Military Backing
Monash University's groundbreaking "DishBrain" has been granted US$407,000 funding from Australia's National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grants program. The semi-biological computer chip, integrated with approximately 800,000 lab-grown human and mouse brain cells, demonstrated learning abilities by playing Pong within five minutes.
Key Takeaways:
The micro-electrode array in the DishBrain can read activity in the brain cells and stimulate them with electrical signals, enabling the brain cells to interact with the environment.
The technology offers the potential for significant advances in various fields, including planning, robotics, advanced automation, brain-machine interfaces, and drug discovery.
The project leader, Associate Professor Adeel Razi, believes that DishBrain's advanced learning abilities could form the foundation for a new generation of machine learning, specifically in autonomous vehicles, drones, and robots.
The DishBrain could enable machines to continually learn new abilities without compromising on the old ones, adapt effectively to change, and self-optimize their use of computing power, memory, and energy.
The grant will be utilized to develop better AI machines that replicate the learning capacity of biological neural networks and help scale up the hardware and methods capacity, potentially making them a viable alternative to silicon computing.
